about

Steph Sweet UK

Born under a cloud of red Saharan sand and singing before I could talk.
“Deeply embracing a true underground spirit is Steph Sweet. It is ushered in with a specifity to it all that lingers on the margins of the fine line between genius and madness, but you don’t hear music like this too often.”

Track Name: Everybody Knows Steph Sweet - VanGabrielProduction
Everybody Knows by Steph Sweet

Everybody knows what is wrong with me.
Everybody knows except you and me.
And everyone keeps going on at me.
And everybody knows what is best for me.
I can't sleep at night, I can't think by day.
I can't eat a thing since you went away.
Got a big black hole where my heart should be.
And everybody knows what is wrong with me.
Nobody sees, no-one believes
Arcing lines of fire.
I smash up my house, stitch up my mouth
I'm burning bridges in my sleep.
Everybody knows what is wrong with me.
Everybody says it's insanity.
But nobody knows and nobody sees
It's a line of fire, you and me.
Nobody sees, no-one believes
Falling lines and fire.
I smash up my house, stitch up my mouth.
I'm burning bridges in my sleep
I'm burning bridges in my sleep
I'm burning bridges in my sleep
I'm always burning, burning.

A Green Penny

I didn’t think. I didn’t know.
There I was, throwing stones up at your window.
All of those things that you said to me,
Swinging our legs through the branches of the trees,
That we used to climb while reaching for the stars.
Dining out on green pennies in black jars.
Out of my mind just to be with you.
Spiral out of time to be with you.

You never said and I never told.
The glint of the blade that is too sharp to hold.
Or the silverfish scars that I wear on my arms.
Singing sad songs to the ghosts to come home.
I remember you shining like a star.
I remember all of our dreams and desires.
And I still keep all of your secrets safe for you.
Spiral out of time to be with you.
Spiral out of time to be with you.
Track Name: What I Did
What I did.

Written by Steph Sweet in England February 2004
Recorded with a half-broken 12string and candlestick chimes through a dented&gaffered Shure58 on a Tascam4Trk 2005

Went to the wall, watched it fall
And now I wait behind it,
With the little creatures keeping me company.
Watching worst-case scenarios play themselves out,
Over and over again.

Went out in the night, all green light
All down around me
To the promise of spring,
To the promise of she.
Found a sacred space in the bottom of a beer-can.
Circles and seed, him and me.

Went out in the dark, went over sleeping fields.
To the dog-fox bark and the creaking trees.
Leaving behind the ills of man
In the starlight.
None else to know and none to see.

I am like light
I am like light
I am light.

Synaesthesia

Written by Steph Sweet 31st October 2004
Performed and Recorded in England Spring 2013

There’s always one, a restless kind of stranger,
Mooching around with a glittery smile.
A sweet tooth smile, getting brighter
Starry saints in a line
But he won’t hurt you, no he won’t.
He believes he can taste what he hears,
He can taste what he dreams.

They’ve been getting out on their own at night again.
In their bed sheets pretending to be owls.
Mud and moonlight and chasing
Bird-shaped wraiths through the grounds.
But they won’t hurt you, no they won’t.
They believe they can taste what they see,
They can taste what they dream.

Some see number-lines out through infinity.
Some have ticker-tape run through their eyes
It’s a strange evolution.
They’re not the ones getting left behind.
No, no they’re not the ones getting left behind.

Of Stars and No Shadows

Written by Steph Sweet in England Midsummer 2010
Artwork by Steph Sweet Acrylic on Canvas

Laughing in the rain, when the faces are all the same,
And they’re all grimacing.
And I’ve been here too many times before to be afraid.
I believe in another world.
Of stars and no shadows.
I believe in a different world.
Where nobody dies
And nobody goes.

Flying to the sun, when the stories are all done
And no-one’s listening.
And I’ve been here so many times before I’m like a kite.
On the wind through the oak,
Under sun, moon and stars
And the crashing of the planets in your eyes,
Is no surprise.

I believe in another world
Of stars and no shadows.
I believe in a different world.
Nobody dies and nobody goes.
Track Name: The Cannon
The Cannon

Written by Steph Sweet in England November 2004
Performed and recorded Spring 2013

The park is beautiful, smoking with you.
Red Lebanese consuela, triple horned-moons.
And we were young and glad.
So there we go, there we go.
Victoria’s beautiful,
Laughing at you.
Some pub car-park on a Tuesday afternoon
And we were young and glad.
So there we go, there we go,
There we go.
She is beautiful.
It was beautiful.
She is still beautiful.

Freakshow

Written by Steph Sweet April 2004
Recorded on a Tascam4Trk 2005

People lining up in bars because it’s all they ever know.
People smashing up their cars
In the christ-almighty freakshow.
The river knows all of the secrets that you keep.
The river knows all of your quiet thoughts.

You can wear your mask of frowns.
All your anger you can keep.
You can run but you can’t hide.
The moon will catch you when you’re sleeping.
The river knows all of the secrets that you keep.
The river knows all of your quiet thoughts.

Is it any wonder that you feel the way you feel?
Is it any wonder that your thoughts are cold
And grey
And useless.
It all comes back to you.
It all comes back to you.
And I hope your mutant grandchildren find you
And eat you and your wife.
