about

Steph Sweet UK

Born under a cloud of red Saharan sand and singing before I could talk.
“Deeply embracing a true underground spirit is Steph Sweet. It is ushered in with a specifity to it all that lingers on the margins of the fine line between genius and madness, but you don’t hear music like this too often.”

Track Name: The Grail
The Grail

Written, performed and recorded by Steph Sweet March 2015

Late sunshine in the evening,
Dusky twilight falls again.
Feels like that funny kind of feeling,
Like falling in love again.
Falling in love again.

They say that hope springs eternal.
I used to think it was just a line,
For when you’re losing direction
And when you’re losing your mind.
Losing my mind again.

A song for the broken-hearted.
A song for the sad and for the frail.
A song for the star-crossed lovers
Still looking for the Holy Grail.
I’m still searching for the Grail.

I’m deeply indebted to the highly talented Unearth Noise for having the patience and kindness to work with me again. His guitars make this song magical to me, thank you so much Roger!

My publisher flew me to New York to sell the film rights to my first novel. He had other, more nefarious things on his mind, somehow managing to make us miss the damn meeting, but I’m tougher than I look…
And I was in New York City, that incredible and most awesome of cities, a City of Dreams...

City of Dreams

October. New York City on a Friday afternoon.
Never seen such a jewel of a city before.
Red tail-lights on Brooklyn Bridge blur with the rain.
And I’m like a teenager with a fever.

The wind whips through the sky-scrapers like a blade.
Subway steam turns reflections into white-glass wraiths.
I’ve come to the City of Dreams among the colours of fire.
I’ve come to throw my book-leaves on a funeral pyre.

Growing older and older.
Getting colder and colder.

I’m an English shadow lost in a City of Dreams.
Bite hard on my lip and I refuse to concede.
Not weeping under all the cold stars.
My dreams lie all in ruin and my mind is ajar.

Smoking outside Eighty Five East Fourth Street, growing older and older.

Track Name: On the Nightshift
As a singer and novelist, I’ve never really paid full attention to having a ‘proper’ career. I’ve always done any McJob going to make the rent, but the eighteen months I spent working in the second largest A&E in the UK has to be the most rewarding, terrifying, exhausting and bonkers work I’ve ever done. Particularly on the nightshift.

On The Nightshift

Written, performed and recorded by Steph Sweet in England 2015

There’s a crazy, hazy rain streaking orange on the glass,
Past the roadworks and the accident, the closed lane on the by-pass.
I didn’t sleep a wink today, I’m going to be late.
Number nineteen had the strimmer out, then tried to fix his gate.
I’m on the nightshift, ooh, I’m on the nightshift.

I corner to the barrier, but I’ve lost my I.D card,
I find it in the footwell. The security guard
Waves me in past maternity, all screams and pink balloons.
Twelve ambulance, three riot-vans, four cop-cars in the gloom.
I’m on the nightshift, ooh, I’m on the nightshift.

I’ve got care in the community in seven to fourteen
And a homicidal maniac has took a shine to me.
Two suicides and a self-harm have just been stretchered in,
While a homeless girl is crying and eating from the bin.
I’m on the nightshift, ooh, I’m on the nightshift.

Poor old soul with dementia is wandering in his pants.
Last orders in the city has brought some drunken lads.
I got crack-heads, whores and junkies all screeching in the queue,
A crash for cash, some swallowed hash , a time-waster or two.
I’m on the night-shift, ooh, I’m on the nightshift.

Please, please don’t spit at me in Accident and Emergency.
Please, please why can’t you see?
I’m just a lowly admin clerk on the nightshift A&E.
Please, please don’t spit at me in Accident and Emergency.
Please, please why can’t you see?
I’m just a lowly admin clerk on the nightshift A&E.
I’m on the nightshift, ooh, I’m on the nightshift.
